Most of the laboratories have sufficient equipment suitable for the fulfilment of their purpose. Several Laboratories have state-of-the-art equipment capable of supporting high level research activities in various research fields of agricultural science. Indicative examples are: analytical systems for gas and liquid chromatography, ion chromatograph, UV-VIS spectrophotometers, electron microscope, atomic absorption system with flame and graphite furnace, total nitrogen determination apparatus, drying ovens, controlled conditions chambers, plant growth chambers, cold chambers, air flow tables and gas extraction fires. The laboratory rooms and their equipment are detailed in item B26.1 (Laboratory rooms and scientific equipment - Farm).
Greenhouses: The Department has twelve (12) greenhouses with a total area of 2,200m2. Of these, three (3) with a total area of 600m2 are fully equipped with environmental control systems and systems for hydroponic crops of various types. The greenhouses, apart from the educational activities, are used to support students' theses and the research activities of the faculty members of the Department.
Insect farm: The Department has an insectary of about 100m2 with five chambers of controlled conditions for rearing harmful and beneficial insects of agricultural interest. Insect bioecology studies are carried out in the area as part of the students' theses and the research activities of the Department's faculty members.
More information about the above mentioned areas is given in detail in section 7 (Learning resources and student support services of the new PPAs).
Other Facilities: For its educational and research activities, the Department has: an orchard with the main trees cultivated in Greece, an olive grove, and a vineyard with a large number of Greek and foreign grape varieties, as well as an open field for the cultivation of annual plants.
